Parent Education
Parents and Montessori guides are essential partners in each child's education, but the lack of literature that clearly defines the Montessori Method specifically for parents can lead to philosophical conflicts rather than harmony between the school and home. To help parents get on board with Montessori's child-centered philosophy, consider purchasing Montessori for You and Your Child for your school lending library to promote a better understanding of the Montessori Method.
Have you ever wondered what Montessori is? Many of us have heard the name "Montessori" but do not know what Montessori teaches. For over 100 years, the Montessori Method, based on the scientific observations of Maria Montessori, one of the first female physicians in Italy, has universally educated preschoolers in Practical Life Skills, Sensorial Awareness, Language Development, Art, Music, Science, and Mathematics. It is a natural way of learning through modeling, freedom of choice, and self-discovery with the aid of manipulatives and trained guides to facilitate absorbent minds in becoming lifelong learners.
Contemporary literature about Montessori is limited. Montessori for You and Your Child is a practical question and answer format book that unveils the mystery of Montessori so families can make an informed choice for their preschool aged children.

Practical Life
Practical Life is one of the four core areas of focus in the Montessori Primary Casa, or classroom for three through six year olds, along with Sensorial, Language, and Mathematics. Activities in Practical Life emphasize the introduction, development, and reinforcement of life skills including hygiene, good manners, gross motor coordination, fine motor control, functional independence (care of self), and care of the environment. Practical Life also includes both universal and cultural practices including art, music, and dance.
While telling time is not an official subject in the Primary Montessori curriculum, it is an essential lifelong skill that is woven into daily activities in the Casa, or classroom for three to six year old children. An at-home supplement to exercises in the Casa, My First Montessori Book of Telling Time provides isolated images of clocks and their corresponding written times as well as strategies for parents to promote learning readiness in their children.

Sensorial
Sensorial is one of the four core areas of focus in the Montessori Primary Casa, or classroom for three through six year olds, along with Practical Life (life skills), Language, and Mathematics. Since young children are hands-on learners, each Sensorial material in the Casa helps students explore one or more of the five senses of vision, hearing, smell, touch, and taste as well as their qualities. "Qualities" are the perceptible aspects of a given sense. The visual sense, for example, has three qualities that can be perceived by the human eye: dimension, shape, and color. Each sensorial quality is explored in at least one separate manipulative in the Casa for optimal learning. Students who have thoroughly explored each sense in isolation receive presentations with Mixed Impressions materials. Mixed Impressions manipulatives combine two or more senses and their qualities. Geography and Botany presentations are also considered Sensorial activities as they are also presented in a hands-on manner that engages the child's senses. Due to universal laws of cognitive development, Sensorial activities are generally best introduced to children ages four-and-a-half and younger. Older students in the Casa revisit prior Sensorial exercises at a more intellectual level through more advanced hands-on work with the manipulatives than their younger peers.
Each book in the My First Montessori Book Series is inspired by one presentation in the Montessori Primary Casa. On each two page spread, a vocabulary term is isolated and centered on one page with its corresponding illustration appearing on the opposite page. In the back of each book is a "For Parents" section that informs caregivers as to what their child is learning at school and offers suggestions to help reinforce the Montessori Method at home. Students can also review the vocabulary and pictures in these books at school as a control of error for their classroom studies in geometry, botany, music literacy, and so forth. Every title would be a wonderful addition to your school lending library and classroom reading corner.

In the Montessori Casa, or classroom for three through six year old students, children approximately three-and-a-half years of age learn to distinguish between and among a variety of textures by feeling swatches in two sets of Fabric Boxes. Following hands-on experiences of touching natural fabrics, students learn to identify fabric swatches by name such as silk, wool, and cotton. As an extension of their previous studies, children may also learn the names of patterns which appear on fabrics such as polka dots, stripes, and checks to expand their knowledge of repeating designs in the classroom and wider world.
Written by AMI Primary Diploma holder Mary Da Prato with illustrations by Mary Da Prato and Genevieve DeVaney Da Prato, BFA, MAT, My First Montessori Book of Patterns provides a sampling of twenty-five patterns to promote awareness and discussion of repeating designs created by humans as well as those that exist in nature. Primary Mathematics
Mathematics is one of the four core areas of focus in the Montessori Primary Casa, or classroom for three through six year olds, along with Practical Life (life skills), Sensorial, and Language. Since children under the age of six or seven learn best through hands-on experiences rather than rote memorization, various aspects of Mathematics in the Casa are explored in a concrete, sensorial manner. Starting around the age of four, students who demonstrate readiness are introduced to the quantities one through ten with precisely measured Number Rods. Number Rods, which consist of equally segmented attached bars of alternating colors, introduce and clarify quantity in a hands-on manner best suited to young children.
Each Mathematics title in the My First Montessori Book Series features a mathematical concept introduced in the Primary prepared environment. On each two page spread, a mathematical term(s) is isolated on the left with a corresponding illustration on the right. Included in the back of each book is a "For Parents" section that informs caregivers as to what their child is learning at school, defines prerequisites, and offers suggestions to help reinforce Montessori's Primary Mathematics curriculum at home. This Mathematics series is a good control of error for students working independently as well as a reference for teachers and parents.

Activity Books
Even though homework is not assigned in the Montessori Primary Casa, parents often like to assist their children at home. Many children also like filling in coloring books. Inspired by the Metal Insets, My Montessori Coloring Book of Shapes is a fun at-home activity book designed for children to practice filling in geometric shapes using the pencil grip to reinforce work done at school. The pencil grip photographed in the "For Parents" section of the book helps families support their children's fine motor development outside the classroom.
Filling in geometric shapes with a continuous colored pencil line prepares students in the Montessori Primary Casa, or classroom for three through six year olds, for cursive handwriting. My Montessori Coloring Book of Shapes helps children refine and perfect their fine motor control while simultaneously reinforcing what is practiced in the Casa. This publication also defines Montessori prerequisites for successful handwriting that can be implemented at home.

Children's Books
Often difficult to find, reality-based children's stories are an excellent addition to any school, classroom, or home library. Well written reality based literature for young children helps foster total reading, which is defined as reading comprehension, the ability to interpret emotional content, and an appreciation of writing style.
Evie-Marie is good at a lot of different things. She can make origami hearts, play all her scales on the piano, remember everything from Spanish class, and write stories that delight the entire class, including the teacher. But no matter how hard she tries, Evie-Marie can't draw. Not being able to draw is frustrating enough, but almost everyone else's suggestions for artistic improvement make things worse. Will asking for help from the best artist in class be the solution to her problem, or will Evie-Marie come to accept that drawing may always be a challenge for her?
Written and illustrated by AMI Primary Diploma holder and early childhood development specialist, Mary Da Prato, Evie-Marie Can't Draw is a tribute to everyone who can't draw as well as everyone who can.
